I don't care for the Joy of Cooking format myself. And truthfully, the conventional format with ingredients at the top isn't perfect either. Ideally, I think I'd like the recipe broken down in steps, with the ingredients in each step called out in little lists in the margin, when you need them. (If I make an error in a recipe, it usually happens in the jump when I'm looking back at the ingredients list). This layout would look like hell, though, and it would make it slightly harder to shop, so I suppose it will never happen...

I've brought the laptop into the kitchen but I am very squeamish about getting it wet and greasy so I always end up closing it ASAP. What I typically do with recipes sourced from online is print them out and if I like them, I'll put them in a page protector for preservation, notes and later reference.

What matters most to me is format. I DESPISE certain recipe formats - the ones written like stories, with details being revealed as you read (Joy of Cooking, certain Julia Child books).

I want my prep list, organized by steps if relevant (wet ingredients, dry, etc) at the top, and I want the cooking steps broken down, not in a paragraph. Must be the old line cook in me coming out!
